1 Hour Keynote & 4 Hour Workshop: "Don't Just Survive, THRIVE!"
Our behaviors are governed by
predictable internal processes, somewhat in the same way a computer is
governed by an operating system. This is quite simply our life.
And like a computer, conflicts in your operating system will eventually
cause you to crash. The three primary components of this
system are Values, Ethics and Integrity. These terms are often used
interchangeably, but they are very different things, and there is a
natural flow between them.
Every decision you make is processed
through a filter of experience, history, upbringing, biases, and
pre-conceived notions. Not one of your actions or thought process is
developed in a vacuum. These combined experiences create your values,
the primary filter through which you see everything. Both individuals
and organizations have values, although most cannot articulate what they
are.
Integrity is the degree to which we
adhere to and behave according to our values. Integrity does not speak
to whether we or our behaviors are good or bad, it simply speaks to the
consistency with which our behaviors are aligned to what we believe.
And believe it or not, most of us violate our own integrity on a regular
basis. That is to say, we often fail to do what we ourselves believe.
Ethics are the degree to which your
values are and behaviors are good or bad… right or wrong. The concept
of good or bad is a relative thing. Unlike values, and integrity,
ethics are NOT black or white. Ethics are relative to your history,
your values, your experiences, your religious beliefs or non-beliefs,
your prejudices, and the expectations placed on you by society. While
ethics are relative, they can be generally defined as "the right thing
Most people have an innate sense of right versus wrong. Without
ethics, organized society would be impossible.
You can never achieve happiness by
following someone else's system. You can only do that by following your
own system. But in order to do that, you must understand your values
and your integrity with respect to those values. This is the basis for
surviving, but thriving in both work and in life.
1 Hour Keynote: "Spooky Action at a Distance..."
Spirituality – sounds very modern, very “new age”.
But it’s a term which today is used in many different contexts. Often,
it takes on a religious connotation, which is appropriate because nearly
all religions believe in a life force, or “spirit” which supercedes
intelligence. For our purposes, we will define spirituality in a much
broader sense as the recognition that all things are
interconnected.
There was a time in our history when this was taken
for granted. Prior to the late middle ages, it was assumed that a
supreme being controlled all aspects of our life, and that our behaviors
directly impacted the things that happened to us. But by the 17th
century, Science created an environment whereby many heretofore
mysterious processes could be explained and even predicted. This
accelerated into the 20th century, and it soon seemed that
science could explain everything given enough time. The idea of a
universal force gave way to logic and reason.
Then along came Einstein and Quantum Physics. It
turns out that the cosmos is not only stranger than we imagined… it is
stranger than we CAN imagine. And it also turns out that the old idea
that everything we do affects everything else is back in vogue. For
example, Einstein’s principle of “Spooky action at a distance” says that
by simply moving my hand, I can cause particles billions of miles away
to vibrate in synchronization, with no apparent communication between
the two.
At the same time, people began to seek for something
we have lost: a greater sense of purpose, of connectedness, of meaning
in life. Spirituality is a way of examining all of these. We all want
to know “what it’s all about”. And the good news is, it is about
something.
We also realize now
that there are multiple forms of consciousness. For example, the
interior mind recognizes what is happening to self. The exterior mind
recognizes what is happening to others. The objective of this module,
through discussion and exercises, is to help us develop our exterior
mind to the point that we are aware that even as passive participants,
we play a major role in everything that happens around us, and we can be
a great force for the our good and the common good.
